> Meditation in a New Dimension

I have recently experienced float tanks or sensory deprivation tanks which are  rapidly rising in popularity. These tanks have been around for over 40 years however in a time where people are multitasking, frantic and over stimulating their central nervous system we are seeing a significant rise in Yoga and other techniques to quiet the mind.

The practice of Yoga teaches us to withdraw energy from the senses (Pratyahara) and in doing so the mind can focus on the internal world. When we move inward an opportunity arises for us to consciously observe, release expectations and comparisons and ultimately begin the journey of self discovery and healing.

The second time I entered the tank I was a little more accepting of what to expect in terms of the silence, water and how my body would respond to the experience – well at least I thought I was!

I very quickly entered into a meditative state and could feel my mind-body connection unwinding, an ‘Ahhhh’ moment. It wasn’t long before my body felt paralysed and heavy yet paradoxically light and free while my mind continued to deepen to a point where I felt I was entering a void. It was through this void and what unfolded that I see the magic of mediation in float tanks.

As our brain frequency begins to settle and we shift out of our concentrating and processing (Beta & Alpha) mind to a temporary state of Theta brainwaves. This state of conscious drowsiness is quickly followed by sleep as the body prepares for healing. In the short period of time where Theta is maintained we enter a Hypnagogic state where images are unpredictable, vivid, creative, insightful and most interesting deep childhood memories are accessible.

For me this float was momentous in my healing journey. I strongly believe I found the origin to a particular thought and behavioural pattern that I have carried around from the age of 7. It is in this awareness that I can create transformation and free myself of long-lived patterns!

It would seem that the combination of a strong meditation practice coupled with the sensory deprivation of float tanks offers a more sustainable state of Theta brain activation. Meditation has moved into a new dimension and the healing effects transformational.
